Naamyaati Machine

Naamyaati Machine is an interactive device that allows users to manipulate visuals using mid-air hand gestures.

Interaction, Generative Design

2023

Naamyaati is an Urdu word that means “organic matter.” It is a machine that talks to organic(human) systems.

In a future where machines are becoming more fluid, flexible, and powerful, this machine is a tool that transforms the fundamental nature of human biology—transcending the human form to an elevated transhuman state.

The Naamyaati Machine is an audiovisual installation featuring a modulating cube and an input keyboard on a pedestal, connected to a display or projector. Two ultrasonic sensors inside the cube, linked to an Arduino Uno, detect proximity and translate gesture data for simultaneous audio and visual outputs in Max/MSP and TouchDesigner. I created a custom Max patch to scale sensor inputs and modulate audio filters, while TouchDesigner produces real-time visuals based on this data.
The Naamyaati Machine has been showcased in several exhibitions, including Waveforms 2024, Fresh Media show at the Boston Cyberarts Gallery, Godine Gallery, and the Design Biennial 2024 at the MassArt x SoWa gallery.
